What's your suggestion?

There currently seems to be no reliable way to create chapter numbers in Google Docs. Keep checking!

Notify Arjun Guha when it's done.

I learnt from https://docstips.com/google-docs-numbered-headings/#Google_Docs_Heading_Numbers_Add-on that there might be Google Docs Add-on that adds support for heading numbers.

Then I tried out "Markdown Tools" add-on and it seems to work as expect.

I found "Markdown Tools" by clicking menu Extensions - Add-ons - Get Add-ons and then searched for "heading numbers" in the pop-up window.

The question is whether they automatically update the ordering as the book changes.

The answer is no.

One has to click menu Extensions - Markdown Tools - Heading Numbers - (choose one numbering style) to manually update them.

There're other add-ons providing heading numbering, not sure if there's a "perfect" one. Or is it ever possible for an add-on to update Google Docs content on-the-fly?

I think I'll just have to wait for Google to add this directly.

It's annoying because it's such a basic thing for a document…

Closing with thanks.

Ooops, reopening because the issue is not resolved!
