Ergonomics for the ch_layout API aren't great for all use cases, but I think it's good enough to merge..? There are a lot of small problems with the library as-is, and fixing them all before adding 7.0 support would take a ton of time.
I think there's some value in getting support merged sooner rather than later and worrying about smaller details after that. If you disagree, adding 7.0 support would need to wait a bit longer I guess
