32 bit compilations segfault quickly

32 bit is not currently supported

time to diagnose and fix 1-4 days

very irrititaing ... this was not a 32bit problem, but different compilers 
align datastructures differently (and yes architecture does play a roll here) 
... so the fix was putting variables at the beginning of a structure instead of 
at the end
