Same problem here. When I hit “Selection” I wait ~2-3sec. which is really annoying when it must be instantly . I make a lot of screenshots and when this software keep me wait 3sec. for a single screenshot it's not useful for me. Also sometimes it just crash and when i choose "Selection" it open blanck window and thats it I must quit Shutter and start it again to fix that.

Shutter worked great in Ubuntu 13.04. Since my upgrade to 13.10 last night, Shutter is very slow. After clicking the "Selection" button until the screen "grays out" so that I can make a selection, is a delay of about 18 seconds. After this, taking the screen capture works fine. Each subsequent screen capture takes another 18 seconds before I can select. Clicking "Redo last screenshot" takes about 3 seconds.
Running shutter from the command line gives these errors:
jim@jim-Precision-M6500:~$ shutter GLib-GObject-WARNING : /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.38.1/./gobject/gsignal.c:2475: signal 'child-added' is invalid for instance '0x4991080' of type 'GtkMenu' at /usr/lib/perl5/Gtk2/AppIndicator.pm line 177, line 19. Clicking off shutter onto any other application adds more lines to the terminal session: GLib-GObject-WARNING : /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.38.1/./gobject/gsignal.c:2475: signal 'child-added' is invalid for instance '0x4991220' of type 'GtkMenu' at /usr/bin/shutter line 6876. I purged shutter and reinstalled from Ubuntu 13.10 and also installed 0.90.1 from the PPAs from shutter-project-org, with no improvement.
