Discussion topic: How can the DOE national laboratories collaborate with universities and academia on training and approaches to funding sustainable software.
Brief description of issue/challenge: The DOE national laboratory system shares scientific research goals and collaborates deeply with the academic community. DOE labs host many student interns and can be the "next step" in many research careers. However there are significant differences in the lab and academic environments for developing and deploying research software. Can we identify these differences? How do they affect software sustainability? How does training in universities carry over, or overlap, with training at the labs? How can we use this information to further collaboration on developing sustainable research software?
