Potential Activity Scope Compare and contrast the career paths of research software engineers in different sectors such as industry, government, and academia, identifying unique opportunities and challenges in each.

This should include outcome measures such as salary.

The study should include a range of predictor variables such as age, gender, educational qualification level, etc.

Potential Objectives To investigate how career trajectories differ across sectors (e.g., academia, industry, government), understanding the unique opportunities and challenges in each.

Targeted Impacts The findings from this study can provide actionable recommendations for individuals considering or currently in a research software engineering career, as well as for funders, trainers/educators, employers and policymakers.

This potential activity was curated as part of "Charting the Course: Policy and Planning for Sustainable Research Software," a Sloan Foundation-funded project within URSSI dedicated to supporting the future of research software through evidence-informed policy work (Project contacts are: @danielskatz and @dr-eric-jensen).
