The log_dir is passed in from check_new_sessions: https://github.com/sibis-platform/ncanda-data-integration/blob/b68e90d4a4b2ed8e5ea60e17556662c603ecbf48/scripts/xnat/check_new_sessions#L932 It seemed to be used whenever we read or write a file, so I use it here to keep that consistent

yes looks good - last night no json file was created so I will debug a little bit
