Window List not working #5

Open fordry opened 12 years ago

fordry commented 12 years ago

I am having an issue where the window list doesn't actually work all the time, seems to be somewhat random but it is more often that its not working, as in, its like its not there. I have Gnome shell on ubuntu 11.10 and it is an HP laptop with ATI graphics and I have the latest Catalyst proprietary driver installed. I Have several other extensions installed and have not entirely troubleshot to see if there seems to be a conflict with another extension (will try that shortly).

I assume you're using the git version? Can you look in .xsession-errors and see if there is anything pertinent?

fordry commented 12 years ago

I don't see any errors that I can tell are directly related. There are plenty of errors........ After I wrote this thread, I started up that computer and it wasn't working, I uninstalled and reinstalled the extension using the Gnome extensions webpage. After that it worked only after I started a file browser window. at some point a few minutes later it stopped working, I went back to the gnome extensions page and just disabled all of the extensions, then enabled the window list first, it returned, and then enabled all the rest and up to this point is has been working ok but it hasn't been very long.

I thought I commented before about this, but I can't find the comment. Anyhow. As of 3.2.2 it seems I am having the same problem as above and it basically just doesn't function properly anymore. Sometimes it wrks after shell restarts, sometimes it doesnt, and sometimes it will only display the list of currently running apps, but not add new ones. It also randomly dissapears after some time, for instance you can have a few apps open and it seems to be working, then everything just vanishes. Any ideas?

I am upgrading to see if I notice an issue.

Thanks. Let me know if I can provide any more details, screenshots, screencast, anything at all.

siefkenj commented 12 years ago

I upgraded to 3.2.2.1, and I haven't had any issues. . .Have you found any reliable way to reproduce this?

l300lvl commented 12 years ago

It is easily reproducible and doesn't require anything special to be done. I'll try to put together a screencast of some kind or something. One thing I can note is that if I go to the overview when this happens and select another workspace and then go back to the main workspace, it seems to return to normal. I did this for a while as an alternative but lately I haven't even been using workspaces and am using the light overview extension.

Sorry about that last bit, the part about light overview extension was mentioned because I also wanted to disable the workspace switcher in the overview. SO, with it disabled now, the only other reliable way to recover a functioning Window List is to do a shell restart, and in some cases it still doesn't work, but most of the time it will work for a while(2 hours or so) before it stops updating. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with activity and seems like the more I'm idle the more my chances are for it to stop updating.

siefkenj commented 12 years ago

Very strange. I can only imagine it might be some possible race condition that's causing the error, since restarting the shell should fix any other issues...

l300lvl commented 12 years ago

Ok. It may seem I was very wrong here. I thought I tested with all extensions disabled, several times. Alas I signed on another user and disabled everything and the window list seemed to work fine. I then proceeded to try to figure out the problem.

What I have figured out is the problems only start occuring when I have removed the Activities button. I dont know if this counts for the removal of only the button or the hot spot or for both combined but I am trying to determine that now, as I don't normally use the activities button.

I still dont know why the problem happens as it does, but I now know how to reproduce it, I think. It could also be a combination of everything I have installed.
