Abstract: Annotation tools are increasingly promoted as a means to improving the accessibility and transparency of research claims made in scholarly publications. While many previous research studies have focused on building tools that support annotations made by the readers of a text there is relatively little empirical work that has focused on authors, and the ways that annotations can be used as a tool for increasing research transparency. In the following short paper we describe work conducted with authors of published manuscripts that return to their research and apply annotations to increase the transparency of their original writing. Conceptually we argue that, in this context, annotations are speech acts - not only presenting supplementary information, but performing transparent ethical research.
