Purchased one each of the following modems: http://amzn.com/B0055310KQ http://amzn.com/B008A0O6KC

Need to find out which one has easier linux support. What SIM card do I need to buy? Are the drivers carrier specific (thus making the SIM card selection dependent upon the driver choice) ??

It looks like there are Linux drivers available for the U600 with a Sprint sim card: http://shop2.sprint.com/en/software_downloads/mobile_broadband/sprint_u600.shtml

(still learning github so hope I'm documenting in the right place) http://consumer.huawei.com/en/support/products/technicalspecs/e173-en.htm - doesn't have details The spec http://www.huaweidevice.co.uk/mobile-broadband/Huawei-E173-White/ identifies temperature range as Operating: –10℃ to +45℃

Neil, issue is not closed. We still haven't set up the modem on the BeagleBone. When this action item is complete we can close the tickets. This allows us to track what needs to be done.

We need to find a BeagleBone image we can use. So far the kernel has been too new. Also older Angstrom Linux may have problems with chef. So lets do something. (Reminder: checkout if Angstrmm can run binaries compiled under Ubuntu??)
