Wrong user name shown in group overview #13698

Bug description

When I look at the overview of my groups and chats, one group consistently shows the wrong user name for one member.

Instead of "Fabian, [Male Name], Jij", I see "Fabian, Suzanne, Jij". A person called Suzanne was never part of the group, so this is an odd mistake. The same male contact is also misnamed Suzanne when I try and add him to a new group.

Steps to reproduce

This mistake only occurs with this particular contact. I have not been able to reproduce it so far but I am a very new user and do not have many contacts yet.

When picking a name, we prioritize system contacts over profile names. So I'd first check to see if you have a system contact set for that number with the name Suzanne. Second, I'd check with your friend to see if they set their profile name to be Suzanne.

I checked that already. I have one Suzanne as a contact in my phone's address book, but it's a different number and she is listed with her surname, so just showing "Suzanne" doesn't make sense. Suzanne and the male contact also never were members of groups on What's App or elsewhere. They move in different circles.

I have fixed the issue. The male contact only had a first name in my address book and I gave them a last name to be sure. Now Signal shows the correct name in groups. I wonder if this is reproducible. I have not tried yet. It seems that for a lack of the last name, Signal defaulted to the next entry (alphabetical order) in my address book and used Suzanne's first Name as a display name. I can reaffirm, however, that those contacts have very different phone numbers and that I have never mixed them up.
