Link to Debug Log

Looks like the link to debug log didn't work, here it is : https://debuglogs.org/desktop/6.26.0/4f07d41501e8afe1f75a7b36b099941b6031118fbcf403ffda7c1ea052ed4582.gz

I'm having the same issue

scottnonnenberg-signal commented 10 months ago

@unbalancedparentheses Can we get a debug log from you?

bernot-dev commented 10 months ago

@scottnonnenberg-signal I also have this issue. Are there instructions somewhere about collecting debug logs?

trevor-signal commented 10 months ago

@bernot-dev, View (in the menu bar) -> Debug Log -> Submit will generate a URL you can share with us.

If you can send a log right after the app did not close, that will ensure we have all the information we need.

And, does this happen every time you try to close the app? When updating? Any information you can provide will be helpful. Thanks!

bernot-dev commented 10 months ago

The debug logs window just spins (10+ minutes and counting).

One potential difference from the issue that @youbzh reported, when I use Option-Command-Esc to force quit, Signal does show up as an option to force quit. Although there is not an in-app "Force Quit" option.

This happens consistently on one of my MacBooks, but not the other. Both linked to the same account. Both running the same version of the Signal desktop app on Apple Silicon, same OS version. Perhaps it has to do with OS settings? One is a bit more locked down than the other.

@bernot-dev sorry about that. Could you compress the logs folder in ~/Library/Application Support/Signal and share that? Alternatively, I wonder if the logs will be publishable within the app after force-quitting and restarting.

It's very interesting that this is reproducible on just one of your machines. Could you describe any differences between them?

Hi, In my case, the app doesn't close only if it is not in fullscreen mode. If I initiate closure with the app in windowed mode, nothing happens. If I switch to fullscreen after initiating closure, it closes. There is no issue if I initiate closure in fullscreen mode. Just posting this hoping it helps narrow the problem down. I faced this issue on macOS Ventura and now facing it on Sonoma 14.0 as well.

Updating from my OP : Same issue with Signal version 6.39.1 on MacOS 14.1.1 (23B81)

trevor-signal commented 7 months ago

@youbzh is this issue consistently reproducible for you? Is it also dependent on fullscreen mode? Could you share debug logs?

@trevor-signal it is not consistent, actually since I've updated to Macos 14.1.1 (from Monterrey) I think it has happened only once. Here is my debug log: https://debuglogs.org/desktop/6.40.0/7d5605767245743c711daaf3f17ed567944a99b4236a6809f4574b79372c7acb.gz

Thank you!

I've been experiencing this as well for the past few months

scottnonnenberg-signal commented 5 months ago

@axelvugts Would you be willing to give us a debug log from right after a slow shutdown? When you experience the slow shutdown, then restart afterwards and submit the debug log, that should give us some good information to try to track this down. Thanks!

axelvugts commented 5 months ago

@scottnonnenberg-signal Sorry for the delay but it just now happened to me once more and this time I saved the debug log after trying to quit the app. To me it seems like this behavior occurs when the app has been updated and restarted itself, but that might just be a coincidence. @scottnonnenberg-signal Here's another debug log: https://debuglogs.org/desktop/6.48.0/42f288afcab7de6788f02a2aecc3edc51096378d2d5cb86cb76155e93f244905.gz

In case it could help, here's a debug log from right after an "impossible shutdown". https://debuglogs.org/desktop/7.3.1/7bada3b6de5f6f96fda1754ee054267d35a9ecaaaf8aacded875e5b60d2c414f.gz I killed the app using MacOS's activity monitor.

Hi am also having this problem, regularly but unpredictably (I am not sure yet what triggers it, but it seems to happen if I leave the app open for a while).

One interesting behaviour: the app was in windowed mode when I encountered the bug (press command-Q or choose quit from the menu, nothing happens). However, if, after pressing command-Q, I make the app full screen, the window expands to full screen, and as soon as the animation is finished, the app quits!

Here is a debug log, taken right after trying to quit with command-Q (but before expanding to full screen): https://debuglogs.org/desktop/7.10.0/57e4acfa806e72eceb182b53d67d27b9a7124f97be2518debd9e25c286e726e8.gz
