Messages not syncing automatically - senders only see's "1 tick" UNTIL i open Signal/chat window - and then I receive it! #6705

Bug Description

Using Signal Desktop for Windows. Not sure when it started but it has not always been like this. I think since like 4 (?) updates back it was working just fine. Messages would load/sync automatically in the background without any issues and would give a notification once a new message arrived.

But now... Whoever is sending me a Signal message only see's 1 tick (instead of 2). In order for me to get the message I have to open up Signal -- first then it will load (and I will see a notification about a new message in the Windows taskbar icon/on Signal). It can be 30 minutes, 60 minutes, it just won't sync automatically in the background until I open it!!

This happens even if I use VPN or not. And again - it wasn't always like this. It happened quite lately I would say. Using no firewall or anti virus. Windows is fully updated.

Platform Info

Signal Version: 6.40 Desktop version for Windows

Operating System:

Windows 10, 64 bit, fully updated

Linked Device Version:

"Main device" that has the registered phone number is a phone thats been turned off for like 4 months. So not sure what version was back then. But, upgraded just now but did not seem to change anything.

My desktop is the one that is the linked device.

Thank you for this report. Could you provide a debug log, please? It sounds like Signal isn't closing to tray for you which is a default behavior. Could you have changed it in the settings by any chance?

The only way Signal Desktop could receive messages after you close it and show the sender the second checkmark is by running the app in the background in the tray.

Yes and this problem happens even if it not closed down fully! I.e. I am not closing it down. I only press the minimize button __ <--- [ ] X I never X it.

I've actually never ever touched settings besides for audio in and audio out, visible alias name and higher media quality when sending and disabling notification sound.

Damn I forgot about the debug log https://debuglogs.org/desktop/6.41.0/615d20613e330cdcd523417b7cb1831f4345042ddd73ba0b2b828751e11fd85b.gz

Also worth nothing; It is not like this the whole time. But Maybe 70% of the time? It seems like if I just opened and minimized the window, and chat message incomes soon after, it will show the "1"+ message icon that a new message has arrived. But if it takes longer maybe 5-10 minutes then its usually not auto synced anymore.

Its a desktop and no laptop so no battery saving stuff enabled.

Not sure if it has been solved or not but. After I opened the phone which has the registered phone number => loaded and auto deleted months of "pending messages" to the phone (which was received on computer already) => it seem to have been fixed?

Edit: Nope. Was not solved. It's still an issue. I wonder if its possible for you to "force check" and force a notification?

Here is a log where it just happened; https://debuglogs.org/desktop/6.42.0/02240d9a72e0555171bf1ecfe0e932924a751057e2f95d5ac9ae37a68bc2d540.gz

I was actually checking down multiple times at the taskbar, seeing no notification... Until I Alt+Tab over it/to it, then it loads about "6 minutes ago".

This happened now within 9-12 minutes from this post.

Within last 5 minutes https://debuglogs.org/desktop/6.42.0/4f798d136f3350fd70a9fa0b961983bb41b42e84e5204fd0620f2a471d392925.gz

And what I notice is; Its enough that I have the ALT+TAB icons up (where i select which window i wanna open) for it to refresh.

I wonder what this is all about.....

grongor commented 10 months ago

I can confirm that the same thing is happening to me on the latest version (6.42.0).

@signallover @grongor We haven't been able to reproduce this behavior on our windows machines. What can you say about your computer hardware, or anything that could be different about your setup and our test computers?

grongor commented 9 months ago

It didn't happen for some time now...so yeah it might have been some strange Windows thing. Nothing special about my computer (2 years old gaming PC with Intel CPU and NVIDIA GPU)...latest Windows updates and drivers...
