Using a supported version?

Overall summary

If I go to the v6.42.0 Release page, there's a couple of comments (one is a Thanks to 2 contributors). But no mention of the fact that Signal v6.42.0 now requires macOS Catalina 10.15 or higher.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Download the v6.42.0 signal-desktop-mac-universal-6.42.0.dmg disc image file.
  2. Open it on a macOS Mojave 10.14.6 system.
  3. Notice the icon has a circle with a line through it, indicating that it is not compatible with the OS.
  4. Double-click on it and a pop-up comes up saying it requires macOS Catalina 10.15 or higher.

Expected result

Comments on the release should note that pre-Catalina OS releases are no longer supported.

Actual result

Only 2 comments on the release and neither mention this fact.

Hi, we don't always include these notes for out-of-date OS's that are no longer receiving security updates.

6.41.0 on Mojave shows a notification that support lasts through March 5th, 2024.

trevor-signal commented 10 months ago

That's the date when that version of Signal Desktop expires (90 days from release), regardless of the platform it's running on.

Hi, we don't always include these notes for out-of-date OS's that are no longer receiving security updates.

You guys are aware that there are apps like MacUpdater and MacUpdate Desktop that tell you what the latest updates/versions of your software are, for whatever macOS version you are running, even if it's obsolete?

MacUpdater thinks the latest version of Signal for Mojave is 6.37.0, even though I have 6.41.0 installed and it comes up fine. Providing information about dropped support or minimum OS version required helps these apps keep users informed. They are incredibly useful apps.

When it comes to witholding this information from your release notes, please consider looking beyond your own nose.

I wonder if any kind souls will release a build or fork of a newer version so that we can still use Signal on Mojave after Mar 5?

I too wonder this question.

I know It's been 8 months, but the tumor is still there. Maybe you guys should take up knitting or painting or something instead of this, for some reason, free and open-source project; or, even better, try yourself in professional gambling - this is the place to do what you do best: withhold and mislead.
