Pressing "n" minimizes the Signal window #7067

Using a supported version?

Overall summary

After I presume some auto update, I can't write without the Signal app minimizing itself. It's really annoying and has left the app unusable for me. I re-installed the latest version to check and it still applies

Steps to reproduce

Go to any chat, or just open the app. Press "n". It gets minimized

Expected result

Write the "n" character

Actual result

Writes the "n" character and minimizes the window.

Sorry about this. Could you try installing Signal Desktop Beta side-by-side to see if the same issue happens there https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007318471-Signal-Beta ?

It might seems unrelated, but what is your keyboard layout? Is it QWERTY?

stanislavkozlovski commented 3 weeks ago

Layout under MacOS is QWERTY, yes. I use a ZSA Moonlander keyboard. But this happens when using my laptop's keyboard too. image

I installed the latest Beta (v5.32.0-beta1) and confirm the issue is still there. I didn't have any recent chats show at all, but just pressing n with the window in focus minimized it again

Hm... mysterious! When you press "n" do any of the top-level menu entries get highlighted as in the video?

Just the "Signal" flashes, very quickly too.

@stanislavkozlovski thanks for checking! If you press Signal there should be a menu like that:

My guess is that one of the items has a hotkey that gets triggered when you press "n" (Probably "Hide"). I'm not entirely sure why this is happening, but this is unlikely to be Signal since we don't configure those. Could be either an OS setting or a keyboard setting, I think!

Correct! Good catch: image

What I'm confused by is how this started appearing now.

Absolutely every other application I have open that I tried has the Cmd+H hide shortcut.

Here is how I fixed it:

I've no idea what and when placed this L shortcut to the Hide, and why that defaulted to N in Signal (and just Signal), and why removing it removed everything (perhaps forced some flush?). The wonders of complex operating systems.

Thanks so much for your help @indutny-signal ! You made me super happy with Signal. Such fast and friendly support you can't even get from paid products. Amazing work ❤️
