Crash on launch after sending failed tag #5601

Open sethbrasile opened 1 year ago

sethbrasile commented 1 year ago

Bug description

My wife tagged me in a group message from the signal iOS app on her iPhone Xr. That tag didn't become a tag for recipients, for recipients it instead became my name as stored in her phone as text with an @ prefix.

Now my wife is unable to open signal on her phone, it force closes. Rebooting her phone and reloading the app have no effect.

I have sent the crash logs.

Unless requested otherwise, I'll likely be wiping signal out on her phone and setting up back up fresh.

If you'd like to close this issue and we'll see at some point if this is reproducible, feel free.

Steps to reproduce

Actual result: broken tag and ios app won't open for sender

Expected result: tag works and ios app still opens for sender

Device info

Device: iPhone Xr

iOS version: 16.1.1

Signal version: 6.24 caused the issue. After updating to 6.25 still cannot open the app.

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 16.5

I am experiencing the similar issue on my phone. I was sending a message with friend tagged in it. Message never went and my app crashed while I was tagging her. After that app keeps crashing instantly upon opening, I updated it to 6.25 and re-installed the app multiple times and issue has persisted. Attaching the video showing app crash in my phone.

I have sent my crash logs to support and through email.

I've the same issue. Tagged a friend with @ in a group, the app crashed. Now unable to use the iOS app, crashes instantly on launch.

Signal was the only mean of communication for me and it has been 3 weeks already with no ETA for a fix from support.

I'm experiencing this issue as well. Also re-installed - no effect.

Latest app version, iOS 16.5

Not sure if this is caused by tagging. I've submitted the logs via email.

It is now 3 weeks, no sign of fix at the horizon. Signal was the only mean of comms for me, this kind of unreliability doesn't vouch for me to keep donating.

Donation suspend, catastrophic failures should be fixed no matter what.

I am in similar situation, signal is the only communication app I was using. I have been donating monthly that I am thinking of suspending as well.

Also sent a tag in a group message and now I can no longer open it.

iOS 16.5 Signal 6.25

I am able to open notifications that bring me to a specific chat. However, as soon as I try to load the main page which shows all the messages, the app goes into crash loop again.

For those that have this issue ongoing, I was able to get my wife's app working again. I don't have an exact play by play, but I did write up a rough recollection to a friend after I got it working. I'll paste that below. When I refer to "the chat" I'm referring to swiping right-to-left on the chat from the main chats view and selecting archive/delete.

"I had to delete the app then download it again and as soon as it downloaded, turn wifi and cellular off, then open the app, then select the chat and archive it, then the app would freeze again, so uninstall again and reinstall then wifi and cellular back off again, then open app and go to archived messages and quickly turn on ONLY WiFi and quickly select the chat and delete"

The archive and delete steps took a long time. A couple of times they crashed and the app seemed locked up while they were working. I had to be patient and leave the app open and plugged in. These crashes seemed memory related, this was a pretty large chat history, but just guessing there.

I'm assuming going straight to delete (skipping the archive step) would probably also work, and I'm assuming it might be possible to enter the chat and delete the offending message without deleting the entire chat, but that's not what I did so I can't say for sure.

Hopefully this helps someone! Sorry I didn't share this sooner, I didn't realize others were affected!

Thanks for the update, unfortunately this doesn't work for me (iOS 16.5, latest version of Signal app, iPhone 13)

  1. I've deleted the app
  2. Downloaded the app from iOS appstore
  3. Put the phone in Flight Mode, disable BLE, WIFI and Cellular
  4. When starting the app, immediately crashes on the splash signal screen with blue background and signal logo
  5. I get prompted from iOS to allow notification and connection to local network

I never reach a screen where i can see the chats list and be able to delete the group chat or archive it.

I've tried to delete and archive the chat from signal desktop but this did not helped.

I've enabled notifications, enabled app background update, asked a friend to send a message but i never received the notification on the phone.

Application crashes instantly if opened.

Latest signal app update on 2023-06-01 fixed the issue for me.

Epic, can confirm! Thank you Signal team ❤️

Miguel-Signal commented 1 year ago

Could those experiencing this please update to the latest version of Signal and see if this resolves the issue? Then, if the issue is still happening, could you send in new debug logs from this new version?

To share a debug log from Signal iOS, tap your profile, Settings, Help, Submit Debug Log, Copy Link, then open this email, long-press and choose paste to paste the link.

Confirming latest update fixed it for me! Thank you Signal team 🙏

the exact same issue happened on my iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 16.5 since 24th May. Been like 5 or 6 updates launched since then and none of it was fixing my crashing problem :'(

I did everything. the saddest thing is Signal wont allow backup on iCloud which will be an disaster if deleting the app.

Horrible.
