App Crashes / Won't Start #5796

Hello,

after transferring Signal data from iPhone 15 Pro (iOS 17.4.1 and Signal 7.8) to iPhone 12 Mini (iOS 17.4.1 and Signal 7.8) - due to switching phones, Signal won't open up anymore on iPhone 12 Mini. No errors occured, transfer took about 1min (just few data).

Same behaviour like: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-iOS/issues/5333 https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-iOS/issues/5795

Because Signal does not offer a good and practical way to backup chats, that is very annoing for me - I MUST NOT lose some of my chats! Having a simple PDF or plaintext export could have saved me!

Also tried restarting phone, app, etc.

Help appreciated. Thank you.

Same problem after transferring from iPhone 11 Pro to 15 Pro Max (same iOS 17.4.1) : if I tap on Signal it open and quit immediately. The transfer happened without any problem. If anyone has a solution 🙏🏻

Same here. Transferred from Iphone 12 Pro to Iphone 15 Pro. Transferring worked like a charm. Shortly after transferring Signal won't open anymore. If I Tap the Icon I see the Signal Icon fullscreen for a very short time (<1 Second) and then I'm on the app drawer screen where I have been before. No notification and nothing is being shown.

I just had the same problem.

The message transfer went without problems from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 13, but when I then try to launch Signal (v7.10) on the iPhone 13, it quits immediately with no error messages.

I am sending a crash log to support@signal.org.

Did you find any solutions to this?

This is kind of a major problem, with many users facing potential data loss (unless they have other clients installed and/or managed to backup their message history, but on iOS at least the latter is a minority I'd guess).

Same s*** on 7.10 Still crashing. No response, neither here nor via support@ … 2,5 weeks w/o Signal app on my business phone … 2,5 weeks no access to sensitive data for doing my business! No fix, but Emojis when calling. Great Job 👏🏼

Signal support got back to me within 24 hours of me sending the crash logs. They have filed the bug to the engineering team. 👍

I linked to this issue, and also stressed the severity of this bug (= app turns totally unusable with potential data loss). I also encouraged them to get one of the engineers to interact with us here. 🙂

They never replied to my crash logs ....

I think it would be good if all of us with problems could email support@signal.org and refer them to this issue and #5795 and inform them that this serious bug is affecting you.

This is indeed a serious show-stopper. 😕

I'm sorry to hear that. :(

If possible, send a crash log (see instructions below) to support@signal.org and refer them to this issue. Or maybe everyone should open new issues, I'm not sure which will get results faster... 🤔

To get a crash log:

  1. Go to the iOS Settings app.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security
  3. Go to Analytics & Improvements
  4. Select Analytics Data
  5. Locate the .ips crash log for Signal. The logs will be named in the format: Signal(DateTime).ips
  6. Select the desired Signal log. 7.a iOS 11 users, tap the Share icon in the top right corner and jump to step 10. 7.b iOS 9&10 users, long press to see the option to highlight text and select the entire text of the log. It will end in EOF.
  7. Once the text is selected, tap Copy.
  8. Paste the copied text into an email.
  9. Send the email to support@signal.org with a subject like:
    • "iOS Crash Log: (your github issue)"
    • Example subject: iOS Crash Log: Crash on launch #111
    • Example subject: iOS Crash Log: Crash when sending video #222 -->

Hello,

Here are all the 29 logs I have on my iPhone about Signal (supposedly crash logs).

Context : I followed step by step the process to transfer my account from my (almost dead) iPhone 11 pro to my (new) iPhone 15 pro max. The transfert was OK, until the end. Until the message on the iPhone 11 pro to delete the app data... since everything was transferred. The PROBLEM : as soon as I tried to open Signal on the iPhone 15 pro max : it crashed immediately. Since then, I've never been able to open Signal : it seems to launch but crash immediately.

Help !

After some research I found this GitHub post of someone with the same problem... and here I am today, begging for help in order to retrieve my data.

NB : I still have access to Signal on my iPad (linked account... but it's just a sort of mirror, not the main account)

Hope you will be able to find a solution.

Having the same issue after transferring signal from two IOS devices. I have already sent crash logs to signal.

@cloudgreen Has the Signal team given you any update?

We are aware of the problem and we are currently looking for a solution. Although our engineers are working on a fix, unfortunately I can't give a specific schedule for resolution. You might see a fix in the release notes for future versions of Signal.

I received, verbatim, the same reply a week ago. Gave up and uninstalled, loosing all my conversations, as the outlook from these 3-4 week old tickets wasn't promising.

Brilliant, I can also confirm that Signal v7.11 now starts as expected here as well now! 🥳 I'm glad I held out. Thank you to the Signal dev team.

Good job @JMaxPayet , @williamshowalter and @SirPanOfTheCake for engaging with this and sending crash repots to the support, etc. :)

One last tip: check out signal-export, which enables you to export your signal history via Signal Desktop. It's a good safety backup to have in these situations, especially for us iOS users... 👍

Thank you! App starts as expected. So, a backup like on Android would be nice now!
