i think the theory of puns is ripe for a theory of evolution and/or design. is it an accident that it's almost always possible to make a pun? or is that the result of an underlying structure that we are yet to expose. if so, how did that structure come about? do aliens understand puns? probably. if so, i suppose it's natural then that everyone has jokes. probably then that means any animal can make jokes. probably they are doing this already and we don't notice. or have you noticed?
furthermore, is it always possible, or even ever possible, to construct a pun-free language? i suppose one could argue it's only possible if there's never any strong relations between words
