Small patch, working as I wan't ... Still some debug info, but the idea is here http://pastebin.com/wAtArkRz

Keep multi protocol when pinging "proxified" server
Remove 1.6.1 support, show it as unsupported
And that's quite all. But still, required a "lot" of code for this few points ... (as some variables were private ..)
Unfixed; error (notice) when server offline ... only occurs when 1.7.4 ping (line, 207 ... Sould catch it ?) Thanks in advance
