Problem opening new Test.silk file #11

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. New files received from Gary via email
2. Moved files into the Context under construction folder
3. Went to load by selecting File and Open in Silkin

What is the expected output?
That file would open and ask for user name

What do you see instead?
Pop-up window: see attachment

The problem here is that I did not clearly label what I sent you. The
"Test.silk" file and the 2 ".thy" files I sent you were all in the Pre-XML
format in which you sent them to me. The error message you rec'd ["parseHeader
seeking a tag beginning with '<?xml-stylesheet type='."] results from using the
'File > Open' command on a pre-XML file. You should be able to open Test.silk
like this:
1) Place all 3 files (Test.silk, Test.thy, and Test(Adr).thy) in an
appropriate folder.
2) Use SILKin's 'File > Open Pre-XML' command to open the SILK file. Register
your name as the User.
3) SILKin will convert the file to the new format (XML) as it opens.
Immediately do 'File > Save As' to some new file name or new location (e.g.
Test-1.silk).
4) Quit SILKin & re-start it.
5) Do 'File > Open' of the new file (e.g. Test-1.silk). Register the User.
Then proceed to test.

NOTE: There were some bugs in the Nairobi version that could allow the internal
bookkeeping to get out of whack. I think your Test.silk file had some
out-of-balance problems. I am looking into that today.

IF there is an out-of-balance problem, you will get a pop-up error message with
the title "Data Loss Monitoring" every time you click on a new Alter. I'll send
you a corrected Test.silk file ASAP.

Okay, I followed you instructions and it worked! At least, up to point 5a) open
new file.

What happened next was truly bizarre. I don't know if this is because of the
internal bookkeeping you mention. When I wanted to test, I selected an alter
(me - as this is of my family). All the details that I think were previously
there (date of birth, etc.) were gone and then I disappeared!

Each time I selected an alter, their current alter page would come up and then
they'd disappear too along with others directly linked to them.

Now I'm left with only one person in the file (see screen shot). I don't want
to click on her and have her disappear too.

I quit SILKin (it did not ask if I wanted to save changes...), then reloaded it
and reopened the newly formatted file, but the different folk were still
missing.

In the picture, I'm not sure if the EH refers to the ego or the alter as they
both have the same initials.

Meanwhile, I went back to the old, pre-xml version and loaded it again to take
a new shot of how it should appear. I was surprised to see that we're now all
dead...

So have quit again and await advice!

Sharon

Wow! This is truly bizarre.

Thanks for the screen shots -- they are very helpful. I will try to reproduce
your problem so I can figure it out. Could you send me the "Harflett Family
Tree.silk" file without making any further changes. That will give me some big
clues.

PS -- the "EH" refers to Eda Harflett #0 (Alter).

I followed the same steps you did, starting with TEst.silk. I was not able to
reproduce the problem. Perhaps it will help if you send me both the "before"
and "after" versions of your family tree: "Test.silk and the 2 .thy files plus
the XML version you saved (Harflett Family Tree.silk).

Using the files you sent me, I was not able to <i>reproduce</i> the problem,
but I think I found the problem. In my 'Open Pre-XML' menu command, I had
failed to re-format all dates found in the pre-XML file into XML format. I
<i>think</i> this could crash SILKin if it encountered pre-XML formats.

I will email Sharon a new SILKin program with that error fixed (and the others).
