fluxbox can't replace metacity in gnome #303

I've been trying to replace metacity (Gnome's default WM) by fluxbox in Gnome.

Basically, what you have to do to do so is to set the WINDOW_MANAGER environment variable to fluxbox. For example, in .gnomerc : export WINDOW_MANAGER=/usr/local/bin/fluxbox Then, when gnome-wm is started, it should choose fluxbox.

You might have to play around in the gnome-session-properties configuration tool so that gnome-wm is started and metacity isn't.

However, it doesn't work as it should. The behaviour is strange : when fluxbox is started, it justs seems to hang the gnome-session start process, until I open a window. Then, the panel(s) are loaded.

It works fine with icewm, which leads me to believe that fluxbox is responsible. Probably something wrong with the Freedesktop startup notification protocol (I'm not sure though).

I don't know fluxbox's code, so I shouldn't be able to debug it myself. However, if you give me some trails to follow, I might try. I can help test changes though.

it can be done. you have to start the gnome-settings and just replace metacity there with fluxbox. come to irc and ask, if you need more details.
