sub groups not showing in Viewer Groups dropdown

I have created a sub group called "Special Viewers" with a parent group "Viewers".

I have then created an assets folder that I would like to protect, but the sub group "Special Viewers" doesn't show up in the Viewer Groups dropdown:

But when you start typing the name of the sub group, it appears:
