@gubuntu we have a setting for this, see https://github.com/GeoNode/geonode/blob/master/geonode/settings.py#L201. This should help
@gubuntu by the way, documents is officially part of geonode and this repo is old and not supported anymore. So feel free to ask on the official geonode users mailing list geonode-users@lists.osgeo.org

I've tried uploading various text files (plain text, XML, QGIS QML files) and geonode rejects them with an error message that these document types are unsupported. Is this a bug or are only certain formats supported?
We need to be able to associate ad hoc files with data sets and be able to download them again when we download the dataset.
