what does the open collector buffer do? They crash the OS on set_oc1(1) #11

I have absolutely no idea what the open collector buffers do. I find that setting set_oc1 immediately crashes the rasberry pi. I am using 4 batteries.

Is there any way the raspirobotv3 board can control 4 motors?
