5 years ago I will try to take a look at it although reverting it back to the old map and adapting the current version of NWO to it may take a while given the sheer amount of additions since the new map was implemented.
As for the reason why Europe is so squashed and streched, I presume the current map is based of a different projection than the Mercator Projection, which is widely used in various kinds of maps although it tends to make areas near the North and South Poles appear to be much larger than they actually are. The vanilla map if I doe recall uses the Mercator Projection.

The current map is absolutely hideous, with substantial distortion (Europe in particular looks really squashed) and stretching and weird pixellated borders. Russia, western China, and India suffer from severe tiling repetition on their farmlands. I would recommend moving to something similar to the CWE map or older NWO maps, or even straight back to vanilla in the meantime. Right now the terrible map is probably one of the main reasons people pick CWE over NWO.
