Hello! I'd like to take a stab at #43. I'm just wondering if this type of API would be acceptable. If so, I'll address tests and documentation.

I'm just wondering if this type of API would be acceptable.

This issue has a bounty, so it's expected that the submitter does the work to figure out the optimal API. Also look at previous attempts at adding this feature.
