Make it a toggle/switch instead of a menu link (see Switch section in http://materializecss.com/forms.html)
Have it on by default for all pages except the home page.

On the broader scale, I think that creating a "dev overlay" helper for single-spa that could be used generically would be awesome. Going to close this issue in favor of https://github.com/CanopyTax/single-spa/issues/151
