HACK SIV - MON 8/12 - END OF DAY REPORT — With a question for you...

  1. The first half of the day was spent packing up from Las Vegas and flying back home. It's beautiful here, out by the Pacific Ocean... but quiet. And a bit sad 🥲 Not being physically around tens of thousands of hackers in the desert anymore. What an incredible place. Already looking forward to DEF CON 2025.

  2. We made a number of small but nice improvements to the UI of the Ballot page. List omitted for brevity, but here are the commits: https://github.com/siv-org/siv/commits/main/?since=2024-08-12&until=2024-08-12

  3. We sent the anti-Vote-Selling Agreement to all the registered voters. Background on it: https://hack.siv.org/rules#the-vote-buying-elephant-in-the-room. So far, 3 have agreed out of the 19 who successfully registered for the $5k Prize Allocation with their DEF CON badges in-person. We begrudgingly knew this would be another barrier to participation. But it's only been a few hours... We are hopeful that with more time, others will join in too. Happily, there haven't been any disagreements or push back about it yet.

  4. We spent a lot of the day again reviewing and refining our Evaluations for all 42 submissions. We made a number of text improvements to many, filling out more explanations & details, clarifying unclear language, and adding links to other pages where relevant. All of these are available on the HACK SIV Public Vote preview page: https://siv.org/election/1723163812399/vote?auth=preview. Overall we're really happy about all of the submissions. Thank you again to everyone who contributed!

  5. We feel pretty good about saying SIV's half of the prize allocations are now final. But we want to get the Public Vote allocation amounts too, before we publish full summaries, and start reaching out about payment details.

  6. The one last thing we need to do to be able to start collecting votes is set the Privacy Protectors for the election. We're feeling a tad stuck on it, which itself is a Known Issue we've written about: https://docs.siv.org/research-in-progress/privacy-protectors. The big tradeoff is speed (to both start & close the vote) vs. highest possible level of vote privacy. Would really appreciate hearing back from you which you care about more. We received some great advice & opinions on this yesterday in-person — many emphasizing the importance of privacy (which we believe is a fundamental human right!), but many others hoping things would move faster. We're also feeling guilty for being behind our previously posted schedules.

So we'd love to end this report with a question for you (pls DM me your answer):

On a scale of -5 to +5, with 0=neutral, how important to you is provable vote privacy? So that no one else can possibly learn how you voted.

I'm interested in your answer generally, and specific to this HACK SIV Prize Awards vote.

Thank you
