docs says that one can download the email and open in the preferred mail client.

a better alternative would be implement IMAP/POP3 servers and allow the client to direct download the emails from mailcatcher

Sorry, this is a nice idea, but it is out of scope for this project. You might like to explore a fully fledged mail server if you need that capability.
