Performance getting worse relative to other libraries #32

We are many times slower than other PCRE bindings. Worse than what's stated in the REAME. Perhaps Text changing to UTF-8 is a cause?

Also note the benchmark isn't even finishing, at least on my machine. (Tests are passing in CI though.) Gotta fix that before closing this issue.
