The website would need an integrated forum, to allow for the community to grow and interact. I'd need very drastic anti-spam options. Best solution would probably be to allow login only through github/facebook/twitter/google (in that preference sorting from my point of view).

Should the forums use the same DB as the current forum? Would something like http://www.discourse.org/ be preferrable, or just migrating to a cleaned up/fixed phpbb?

I prefer phpBB, because I works. The only problem is the spam, but that should be fixed with the next release, which provides OAuth. See https://github.com/unknown-horizons/unknown-horizons/issues/1956 for more details.

From my point of view we don't have a lot of valuable content in our current forum. It would be nice if it could integrate with our design at least somewhat. discourse could probably work, given they have login using github.

Linking blog posts to a thread in the forums (and thus combining blog/forum accounts) would be very nice, and Discourse looks like it supports this. I don't care much about our existing user accounts themselves, but if we're going to attempt some kind of import, it'd be nice to retain authorship information to a certain degree.

Oh, and I really don't think phpBB "works" in any way right now.

From the sound of it, I think I'll try to keep the current forums running in closed state, and make something like Discourse the new forum. This could be maintained indefinitely, or as stated here there are plans to add an import functionality, and we could completely migrate over at some point in the future.
