I guess this is Mac OS related? Please see my answer to issue 112.

Nope, it's running Linux (the Crystalbuntu flavor).

Ok, I could have guessed that by the "...buntu" part of the name.
Can you show me a log after you tried to launch a game? And, can you launch
games in Crystalbuntu from command shell?

I am also having this issue running XBMCBuntu (Eden) and running FCEU NES
emulator on normal computer hardware. I pulled up the log and notice this line
"WARNING: Trying to add unsupported control type 1
18:18:54 T:3016824592 WARNING: Previous line repeats 1 times.
18:18:54 T:3016824592 ERROR: Control 500 in window 13000 has been asked to
focus, but it can't"
Just like the OP, I can see the game open but have no audio or controls. Tried
Solo mode, but noting opens.

I'm seeing a similar issue when using this Raspbmc (an XBMC build for the
Raspberry Pi), which is itself built on a flavour of Debian linux, I think.
I was launching the SNES emulator that was installed using the RetroPie script
(http://petrockblog.wordpress.com/2012/07/22/retropie-setup-an-initialization-sc
ript-for-retroarch-on-the-raspberry-pi/)
...which uses RetroArch for emulation
(https://github.com/Themaister/RetroArch)

Does it work for anyone of you when you launch the game outside XBMC? Just copy
the command that RCB writes to xbmc.log and paste it to a command shell.

Also having this problem, running XBMCbuntu. ROMS are all imported, trying to
use FCEU, but shrinks to upper left corner (no sound either), not having any
luck editing config file (Linux newb)... Solo Mode does nothing.
Can anyone help with this?

Old issue, but maybe you could try a solution like this:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=133453
Not sure, if this valid for Crystalbuntu.
