Plastic is everywhere...straws, utensils, plates, cups, take-out and bags. Plastic litters our streets, chokes our water ways and wildlife, glues toxins like PCBs to its surfaces, persists forever (certainly does not decompose in your lifetime or your grandchildren's lifetimes), and it ends up all over the planet! The City of Houston spends millions and millions on plastic clean up. We could spend that money on other things to help society like feeding the homeless, job training, or zero waste programs.
How can we avoid the single use plastic consumption in local restaurants? Create a tool that rates local restaurants on their single use plastic consumption. If you know which restaurants are trying to avoid this pollution, then why not patronize them. This could create competition among restaurants to be creative and innovate how to serve patrons without poisoning the planet.
