311 data jam ideas

We're having a 311 mini data jam on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. It's a great way to get acquainted with 311 data, since we'll be announcing a month-long 311 data challenge.

Some of the project ideas that city folks have come up with include:

• Redesign the 311 dashboard for various users (citizen, manager, service rep, emergency management, etc.)
• Put together a network map of work orders, looking at event times
• Create new tools that can summarize 311 requests by neighborhood or council district
• Create a 311 twitter bot that tweets when...(fill in the blank)?
• Improve the ability to navigate and search 311 data
• Conduct an analysis of the number of service requests per issue
• Put together a marketing campaign for using the 311 app
• Build a polygon draw/select/save tool for 311 requests for super neighborhood and civic association people
• Conduct research into how Houstonians would prioritize service requests, and how long they think it should take.
• Create a database of 311 data and an API for the public

We have the data prepped and will be distributing it on Saturday for the 311 data jam. Looking forward to seeing you all there! :)

With the 311 app, I'd love to see more than "workorder created" before an issue is marked as resolved.... What has the city done? Or what is it planning to do? If anything?

It's been a while since I used it, but I know I found it hard to select an appropriate category for my complaints. And I mostly complained about builders blocking sidewalks, and letting their trash float all over the neighborhood. And there were three different builders. It seemed like they dealt with my first complaint & ignored the others. Which is too bad because the first one was a house down the street from me. The other two were directly across the street. And I left the trash in m yard for ages so it would be there if someone finally showed up.
