Handle details that include a measurement #63

There are edge cases where we have collected the handle's length in addition to the standard measurements such as Overall Length or Tip Dimensions.

  1. Should we include the handle measurement in the handle field?
  2. If we include it in the handle field how should we format it (e.g. 4 1/2" Thumb Handle vs. Thumb Handle 4 1/2")?

Questions:

  1. It is necessary to sort the data in this field and if so would having numerical characters mess that up?
  2. If so, could we enter the numerical value for the length of the handle following the narrative description of the handle? (In the same cell)
  3. Not all instruments would have a specified handle length, correct? Such as 30-1560, Double End Probe
  4. How would we specify what warrants identifying a handle length?
  5. Would we identify on the instrument specific page/repository what determines the handle area for the various instruments?

  1. No.
  2. Yes.
  3. Correct.
  4. I don't think we generally need to seek out handle measurements, but if we had them I thought we should consider including them somewhere
  5. I think that would cause needless headaches; there's just so much variation, and handle measurements usually aren't the feature that distinguishes one instrument from another.

@mwmalinowski

From what I just reviewed as a random sample from the warehouse it seems like most, if not all, instruments with a measurement attached to them are indicating an overall length. Obviously, French measurements, centimeters, and millimeter measurements aren't referring to a handle length.

I can add something to the Handle description indicating that if by chance there is a specific handle measurement it can be indicated in the Handle field, but that most often the Handle field will indicate shape or type of handle versus a length. I can also reiterate that if there is a length, it will most often be an overall length and be reflected in the Length field or it will be a diameter and will be reflected in the Diameter field.

I'm sure you will have hypotheticals and/or examples to contradict what I have said above, but let me know your thoughts.

No, I agree with everything you said.
