Thank you Adam! To be perfectly frank, I don't have any capacity these days to be doing maintenance on Crimson, and particularly not on this first (2010) version, which this repo doesn't track anymore.
If you have Glyphs, and prefer to continue using the 2010 Crimson, your best bet may be to simply correct this issue and recompile the fonts yourself – and then perhaps re-raise this with Google Fonts through their repo at https://github.com/google/fonts.
I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you at this moment, but I still appreciate you flagging this. Cheers!

I absolutely understand. I’ll try to figure out all the GitHub stuff and amend the ff ligature spacing. It might give me a push to add some fonts myself.

First off, this is a very nice typeface but there is an issue with the f_f liga. I had a look in Glyphs and it seems the right sidebearings of f do not match the f_f causing the large space.
You can see the issue on Google Fonts.
