low priority, but now that we have some number of software users besides me, it would be cool to somehow let them know to get the latest version after a release comes out. Is there some library that makes this kind of thing easy?

On Mac there's a great library for software updates called Sparkle. Googling, looks like someone made a Windows version: https://winsparkle.org/
