Most of the work required for this is already done, but it's not quite there yet.

The way that I was accessing the global metadata from the sink block was not working well with swig, so I've gone ahead and switched to explicit setters, see b4b4dfda01d3b7b5dc00becfe6194d3cf87d0bdc
