Existing code allows for a atmega32u4, will looking into updating this on future revisions.
Any future versions will be ARM based. Switching to the 32u4 is not worth the time to re-lay out the board . In addition a USB micro connector would not save space over the current FTDI connector.
look into updating the atmega 328p to an atmega32u4 or similar for direct usb programability. This may shed some weight / size in connectors.
