Swing Flickering when invoking the progress bar #429

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Any action that invokes the progress bar causes the canvas panel to 
flicker.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Please use labels and text to provide additional information.
This is not related to the cell flickering, this is caused by our swing code.

Note: This Swing flashing/flickering only happens if your computer is using 
Java 6+, 
haven't been able to duplicate it while using Java 5. 

Also duplicable by bringing up the context menu, and/or expanding the sidebar.

Closing a whole raft of issues because they are not relevant to the web version
