Delay between view2D appearance and view3D rendering #471

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Launch current wbc-stable link (0.7.6.4)
2. The splash screen disappears before the 3d view is initialized
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
User will think that the program is hung before the 3d view comes up.

Please use labels and text to provide additional information.
This started happening with the fix we put in for the web start problem that 
created WBC downtime.
