probe tool not working

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.selecting the probe tool from the view menu
2.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect for the probe to appear, instead the viewing space is greyed out. the 
mouse inside the greyed area still works, it tells the name of the bject that i 
would see, however nothing appears

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
using 0.7.7.6 on Windows 7 x64

Please provide any additional information below.
