New items badge never clears

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Have the extension fetch some new activity.
2. The new activity leads to a badge on the extension's icon with a number, 
indicating the number of new items that have been fetched.
3. This badge is persistent and never goes away.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I would expect that when clicking on the extension's icon to display the new 
activity, the badge indicating the number of new items would be cleared until 
the next time new activity is fetched. This is how other Chrome extensions 
handle that sort of thing, like Chromed Bird for Twitter notifications. 
Instead, clicking on the extension does not clear the badge.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
The default version of the YouTube Feed Chrome extension, with the development 
build of Chrome on OS X.
