the alert for new messages received doesn't refresh with new info without page reload

1. You have no messages and there's no alert.
2. You receive a message; an alert saying "You have 1 unread message" appears.
3. You receive another message; the alert never updates to say "You have 2 unread messages".
4. Reload the page, or go to any page in the site, and when the alert appears, it will have the correct text.
