Floating windows will not dock properly #3524

I am using the latest release of autopsy 4.6.0. I floated the Results and Content viewer windows and when I select either window to dock, they do not dock properly. If the Results view was docked and I try to dock the Content viewer, it docks over top of the Results window. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling and still the same problem. I'm using Win10 with dual monitors and 64gigs of RAM.

@mrpumba2147, I was unable to reproduce your issue, although I noted a different problem - my content viewer did not stay floating for the next invocation of Autopsy. However, I am working on a Windows 10 laptop today, rather than my multi-monitor set up. I will do more tests tomorrow and post an update here.

In the mean time, you can "restore" the out of the box layout by deleting the ~\AppData\Roaming\autopsy\config\Windows2Local directory. For example, on my development machine, it is located at C:\Users\rcordovano\AppData\Roaming\autopsy\config\Windows2Local.

P.S., I am the Autopsy tech lead at Basis Technology.

YESSSSSSS that worked. I should have saved the Windows2Local folder and sent it to you but I was desperate and wanted to get it back to normal. It has happened on my test computer, which is now fixed and also my forensic machine. I'm overseas now but when I get back to work on Monday, I'll pull the Windows2Local and send it to you so you can look at it if you need it. Glad that you were able to resolve the issue!!!

@mrpumba2147, I'm glad I was able to help. I have some partially formed hypotheses about what is causing the problem. If I'm right, then when I get back to the office myself, I will be able to effortlessly reproduce the problem with my own multi-monitor set up. However, if I'm right, the problem is almost certainly an issue in the NetBeans RCP (rich client platform) that Autopsy is built on, rather than in Autopsy itself.

Just an update for anyone else having this same issue, I installed the video triage plugin, and upon doing so, my results viewer was docking above the tree viewer. Floating and docking the windows did not place it correctly. Deleting the local file immediately corrected the issue. Running Windows 10 Pro 1909, HP Zbook G2, 32 GB Ram, i7 4710MQ; Autopsy 4.14.0
