Idea for alternative support patten #341

Ipecacd commented 12 years ago

The support patten that you use, I find to be really hard to remove. What about using a pattern like this.

alranel commented 12 years ago

How does that differ from the current one? It looks really like the same pattern (rectilinear). By the way, next release will carry honeycomb pattern for support material.

IdolCrasher commented 12 years ago

Cool cool. Yeah, the version 7.0 support was crazy difficult to remove. How is the support material in 7.2b? any good?

Ipecacd commented 12 years ago

I find it is still very hard to remove but alexrj said that 0.7.3-dev has honeycomb pattern never tryed that before. Cant wait for him to pack it up for windows.

Slic3r is the best and worst slicer out there! ;) No raft options, no (actually removesble) support instantly kills SO many prints.

On the other hand... Prints that don't need support or a raft turn out SO SO great!

So torn! I don't want to go back to Skeinforge hell!

I donated in the hopes that these two problems get addressed!

Ipecacd commented 12 years ago

Yep im right their with you. For the mean time I make my own support for my parts, It work very well it just takes alittle long.

IdolCrasher commented 12 years ago

Tell me. What methods do you use to add support? I am still learning the ins and out of with world; but I have a few "impressive" prints under my belt. I want to learn everything I can!

Ipecacd commented 12 years ago

Some times I will add a wall, if all that is needed is a bridge ||-------|<wall. other times if im making a ball ill use the patten in my first post.

Intrinsically-Sublime commented 12 years ago

I have been printing for almost two years and have printed crazier things than most people out there and have NEVER used raft or support. If it is obviously going to need support when I am modelling it I will add support in the model as it wastes way less material than auto generated support.

IdolCrasher commented 12 years ago

I am not a raft fan either ;) My need for a raft comes from using cheap Chinese PLA /*blushes

The cheap (ridiculously cheap) filament source I have found has epic trouble sticking to the plate, but has super awesome printing qualities after that.

/*Fingers Crossed

Needing a raft is not a niche need (IMHO). I can add mesh/raft easily enough... But I think I am not the only one who could use a raft every now and again.

But hey, whatever alexrj decides ;) It is his awesome project :)
