A newline at the end of configure.ac might fix it.

I've just googled for the error message but this issue didn't show up there, how did you find this?

I googled "automake INTERNAL ERROR: recursive push_string!" without the quotes. It was #2 in the results. Not bad for a forgotten repo :)
