Tracks with an alternate battle version currently always play the standard version, and do not change regardless of combat status.

I'm a little confused on the whole "special mode" thing in general. My favorite track in the game is "Blood On the Wind." Is it not possible to listen to this using the plugin?

You would have to be in combat to do so, but Dawntrail broke the special mode functionality. I have not fixed it yet.
