Just out of curiosity, I made a lot of fuss using explicit syntax for highlighting the Shell commands. In constrast, you simply indent them. Is this the recommended way to mark up Shell parts in READMEs?

Yes, the newline, 4-spaced-indent, newline syntax is the GFM shorthand for sh code blocks.
