This is is due to the way that browsers (in particular IE) handle rescaling of images to smaller sizes http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9945363/image-scaling-causes-poor-quality-in-firefox-internet-explorer-but-not-chrome and I checked and the raw png logo is massive which means it will look bad when rendered at a smaller size by browsers as well as making the page bandwidth requirements (and hence page load time) worse. The solution is to create a modified version for use using GIMP / graphics tool.
